Through the Team Up initiative, Truman Heritage Habitat for Humanity hosted an intergenerational build designed to bring people together. Mike and Tom’s friendship was formed on that Habitat build site as they spent hours together each week, renovating a pair of homes. Today, we mark one year since the launch of our global advocacy campaign, #HomeEquals, which aims to seek policy changes at all levels of government to increase equitable access to adequate housing in informal settlements. To date, incredible progress has been made! 45 policy or systems changes have been successfully enacted at the local and national level and 3 million people living in informal settlements have gained improved access to adequate housing. https://lnkd.in/eHQd5Jca

Around the world, Habitat uses innovative and scalable approaches to address the global housing crisis, like converting underutilized spaces into housing. In Slovakia, a local nonprofit called Opportunity Centre Valaska and Habitat for Humanity Europe & Middle East are transforming an empty building into an apartment complex so that more than 30 families will have a safe, affordable place to call home. They are also working together to complete a building renovation that houses the operations center for a laundry business that employs 50 people from the region. “Instead of tearing old buildings down or constructing new ones, I believe it’s better to try to preserve the old buildings, restore them, reconstruct them and come up with good uses for them,” says Ján Koša, a construction supervisor for the Opportunity Centre Valaska project.
